Windows Media Player doesn't play wmv file

Hi there,

a couple of weeks ago I downloaded the updated version of Windows Media Player to my PC which runs on Win 98. However, after using it I noticed that it has a major problem playing .wmv files, either the screen freezes or the image appears blocky and pixalated, similar to when you are trying to view a poor quality recording of a DVD at home. This renders the picture virtually unviewable.

This issue did not occur on the previous version of Windows Media Player nor does it affect files such as .mpeg, only .wmv files. Does anyone know why this is happening and do they have a remedy for it? Do I require to download an appropriate codec which I don’t have?

thanks in advance,

G

Have you checked the ‘Options’ dialog box in WMP, so you have wmv file types enabled? There is also the option to enable all ‘File Types’ there.

Also, you could try downloading the following Download XP Codec Pack 1.3.4 - XP Codec Pack is one of the most complete codec pack However, it is, by descripton, essentially an ‘XP Codec’ utility, so I don’t know if it would work for Win 98.
