Windows XP freezes

I got a 6 month old pc I built myself bought it as a bundle everything compatible. Now its constantly freezing and once in a while I would get the 0x0000009c error which tells me its a hardware related problem. I just need help to narrow it down.
NOTE: I am not overclocking everything in BIOS is default

So when this first started happening I:

  • Upgraded BIOS
  • Bought new PSU
  • Bought bigger CPU heat sink
  • Changed RAM (Even did memtest86 for 12 hours no errors)
  • Reinstalled XP SP2 on different HDD (w/ all windows updates)

Still same problem but doing it less now its about every 30-40mins that it hangs.

PC specs:
Mobo AsRock 775i65G

Hi Mate,

Did you apply the thermal greese when installing you new heatsink and fan? maybe trying a hardware testing program such as TUFF test would be an idea as this test more than jsut the memory. Although to me it sounds like a temperature issue the temperatures you have provided in your spec look fine. have you checked all the connections?

hope this helps Dave:cool:

:agree:

have you checked the temp of the GPU ?

mine was doing that last week, It turned out to be the power supply wires to the hard drive was pinch..

Yes thermal grease was applied, and I was thinking of running a stress test also any recommendations? All the connections are fine but ill double check all the molex pins and such. Im not able to get a GPU temp I think that card doesn’t support it cause I have everest ultimate edition and theres no gpu temp.

Hiii Mate,

I recommend TUFF test, because its bootable and tests everything in a non windows enviroment so the results should be more realistic.

hope this helps Dave

Hi,

I ran TUFF test, PC-Doctor, PC-Check and other various non windows hardware tests and everything passed. Ill try taking out the Radeon card then see if the problem persist. Theres barely anything connected. Im going to disconnect all my chassis fans as well.

Does the BSOD cite any file (thistargetfile.sys) in the error? Is it the same BSOD all the time?
What are you doing when it freezes?

Have you updated the drivers?
I’m not sure if the 9600Pro’s have hardware monitoring or not, but if it does, it should be in the ATi Control Panel. I do know the XT’s did, but I’m thinking the Pro and plain 9600’s did not.

What temp are you getting for the CPU?

I get the BSOD rarely, but when I do get it its the 0x0000009c error code. When the PC freezes Im doing nothing I would be off the PC then id go back to it in a few minutes and screen is froze. CPU temp avg is 33C. I disconnected everything including vid card and all chassis fans also CDRW still same outcome. Im out of ideas, it leads down to the cpu and mobo.

make sure your CPU fan is turning i was playing C&C3 and it froze so i found out it was the CPU fan not turning

Cpu has a Scythe Ninja Plus REV B. heat sink with a 120mm that always runs at 1600 RPM, even if the fan did stop id be fine. I can run this heat sink fanless, google it you will see why.

This isn’t a heat related issue got that covered.

I recently had the exact same problem, xp would freeze randomly even when the pc was idle, also had some random blue screens with the 0X9c error.
I even did the same things you have done to find out what it was.
In the end my pc would not post at all , power LED was on but it just would not post .

In my case it was my motherboard (A8N-SLI Premium).
I sold my Opteron 185 + my 2gb OCZ platinum on ebay and raised £220 then added another £130 to get a Intel Q6600 CPU, P5K Premuim Mobo and 4 X 1 gb of Corsair Twinx 800mhz RAM. :stuck_out_tongue:

It would have cost me £80 for a second hand A8N-SLI Premium anyway

Now i have an amazing rig for £130 :chk:

Hope you sort it out , good luck.

check the cpu pins on the motherboard, a bent or miss-alligned pin not making a connection can cause issues (as the cpu and components cannot communicate properly) and causing problems with windows accessing memory addresses /chips etc etc
