16 colors maximum

I'm running Win ME.
In my Display settings I get no option for number of colors but "16".

The computer is an older "Basics" brand running a 200 pentium
and SIS VGA adapter integrated into the motherboard.
I loaded the correct driver.

Still my maximum colors is 16.
Anybody have any ideas on how I can solve this cluster.
 
Is there a conflict showing in Device Manager? Have you tried a different driver?
 
Have you been able to achieve higher than 16bit color in the past?

I'm guessing it's probably a limitation on either the video card or monitor considering it's a p200. If you have been able to achieve higher than 16 bit color in the past have you changed you monitor? If not I'd take BigB's suggestion and try to see if there is a conflict somehwere or maybe buggy drivers.
 
Yes, I was able to get more than 16 prior to reformatting.

I checked the device manager for both the adapter and monitor.
It tells me both devices are running properly and have the correct drivers installed.
 
And yes I tried a couple diferent drivers without success.
I removed both the adapter and monitor from the device manager. I let Windows find them and load a driver.
Still 16 colors!

Nope. The machine was running Win 95.

After reformatting I installed Win 95.
Then I installed the ME upgrade.
 
Did u check if the drivers were win me compatibel ?
If not u should install win 98se its fair more stabel then win me and it will probally solve ure problem cuze it worked in 95
 
RZA is correct. I tried to refrain from blaming ME, but he's correct in stating that ME is garbage. He's also correct in stating that ME needs ME-specific drivers. 98 drivers may work, but ME has had some poor tinkering done and tends to be a real bastich with drivers sometimes.
The other possible source of the problem would be the 95->ME upgrade. Even with the upgrade disc, you can simply use the ME right off the bat and feed the installation the Win95 disc to prove you own a previous copy of Windows. Don't know if that's the answer, but it could be. I don't like sending people through a reformat/reinstall if at all possible, but it might be wise to give it a shot while things are fresh.

Your diagnosis of ME being the culprit was correct.
I reformatted, installed 95, installed the VGA driver that came with the system and VOILA! .. TRUE COLOR!...

BUT!..
Now I can't get the system to recognize anything in an expansion slot.
The sound card and modem that worked fine before and after the original reformatting won't work.
I went through control panel - modems- search-
No modem found.

I tried plugging in another PnP modem that I know is functioning. Windows could not find it.

In device manager the sound card reads" The device is not present or is not operating properly"

It seems to me that the mainboard is not communicating with the ISA expansion slots.
I installed an IDE bus master driver as instructed by the mainboard docs.
The driver shows up in device manager.

Any Ideas?
