Well it turns out my XFX6800GT was going bonkers. It officially started acting up on me when i played guild wars. My entire system would restart and windows would say "the system has recovered from a serious error" and then guild wars would also randomly end saying "a hardware error has occurred" Or something to that effect. Either way, I RMA'd the card for replacement over at newegg. Up until now this looks like a "so who cares?" post lol but, I also have a small bit of info. I found out that with XFX cards there's a fix for counter strike source. So if anyone has an XFX card and you're getting relatively low fps for your card in source, you have to change a setting on the card that's not there unless you install the coolbits registry. Don't mess with the clock speeds if you're not into that, however a new section opens up labeled "More Direct 3D" and under that link set the "Frames to render ahead" from "3" to "0". That should work. At least that's what the XFX support staff told me, I haven't been able to test it out because Newegg currently has my card. Hope this helps anyone with an XFX card.
Uh oh, I have a thermaltake 420 W power supply, should i upgrade before i bother installing the newegg replacement? If so, what should i get? I don't have unlimitted cash, but. i can afford something decent.
Wow thanks for the tip, I don't blame you for RMAing it, go for EVGA this time if you can, I'd trust them more myself aftet hearing all the good reviews on this site and others. And they almost consistantly ship with OpenGL 2.0 as you now know. So you're going to replace that card I take it? If I were you I'd check for cheap X800XT's myself, you can probably find one for $350 quite easily, maybe even lower. And yes that PSU is perfectly fine for the task, if you had a cheesy 420wt psu I'd have my doubts, espcecially if you had a 6800Ultra but you don't so all is well.
eVGA 6800GTs for pciex16 350 with free 2nd day shipping http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=322716&affiliate=pricegrabber same exact card as mine :good: haha You can overclock the 6800GT line up so close that you can barely notice the difference from GT oc scores to Ultra Stock.
I'm surprised the 6800GT prices aren't dropping faster, the card started out at $400 after all, what are they waiting for.
Unfortunately I RMA'd the card for a replacement not for a refund. Newegg doesn't do on the fly exchanges. I would have had to gotten a refund at a 15% restocking fee. (For those who aren't math majors like myself, out of 350 USD thats about 50USD) And i wasn't about to take a 50 dollar plunge just to get a refund. So if my math is correct, if i had gotten another 350 dollar card i would have paid an extra 50 bucks for it even though its only 350, so the card is like...400. wow brain fart. So i'm just sticking with the replacement newegg sends me....unless someone here wants to make an offer lol.
