    Leet-speak (L33t, 133t, L337 etc.) Actually began as hacker terminology, it was more or less dirived from the work 'elite'. It's mostly an MMO/online chatroom filler language but you'll see it in many popular forums. Not so much on HWF's as we have more or less condoned posts that are a challege to read and distracting (basically ones made up of internet lingo type stuff). But if you plan on fitting in on certian severs you'll need to recognize a few of the more common works out there, and you can impress your l33t-savvy buds with some other not so well known ones too.
    This is obviously the tip of the iceburg in terms of the vocabulary out there but it's a start:

    First get used to replacing letters with numbers or symbols. You can be really creative in what you replace but generally you can just get more l33t umph from sticking in the following.

    -0 An obvious replacement for the o/O character, for intance "c0ws are sweet!"
    -3 Replaces the e/E. As in "I 3at my wh3ati3s".
    -7 Not as common but can be used as a substitute for the letter t/T. For instance "7oo bad for you!"
    -1 Often used in place of l or sometimes i/I as in "1et my codp1ece go!" It get's tricky as it can be seen as both letters.
    -! A substitue for the letter i/I "Back !n the old days kids used to play w!th toys"
    -4 Can be used as a makeshift a/A, "Wh4t the cr4p!"
    There are more but these are among the most c0mm0n.
    EDIT: Waffles was kind enough to remind me of 5, as in s/S, "5h!7 ! 5uck!"
    -X0r/x0r- A suffix for extra l33t body to your words. Among the most popular are "You HaX0r!" or "You SuX0r!" (as in hacker and sucker). If you're feeling imaginative you can also use xx0r,z0r, and XX0rz etc.

    pwn- Origionally a bad typo for "own" as in to beat someone badly or 'own' them in a figurative sence. "I'll so pwn you next match!" Or "I pwned you again!"

    j00- You, for instance "no soup for j00!"

    w00t- Probably the second most well know of the batch, there's no standard definition for it but more of less it just means Yay! (though sometimes sarcastically).

    pr0n- The l33t form of porn.

    uber- A widely used prefix that means what it would in standard english, extremely. "Wow, you were pwned uber-bad." It can also be used on it's own as an adjective, for example: "That mithril bra is uber!"

    w0rd- Can be used as a greeting or fairwell term. Or to express ones agreement or acknowledgement.

    phear- (or ph34r, f34r,ph33r, etc). As in fear, "Phear my l33tness!"

    gnos- (or gn0s) Just means nooo! "Gnos, my boots!"

    -age- Suffix to describe a state of being for a given noun. "Sweet b00bage!"

    obobs- Once a typo for boobs. Apparently this is a hard to spell word as I'm seen "bobos" bjoobies" and "buubes" (though they may be intentional).

    Last but not least n00b- You'll find most gaming forums riddled with this one. It's a term to describe an inexperienced person, a new-guy, newbie, newb etc. "Wh47 4 dumb n00b!"

    These are among the more useful of the bunch but as I said, there are a ton of these including as many variations as you could imagine. Feel free to add to the list!

    j00 i5 pwnz0r3d bi t3h ub3r m0d w4f135!!11111one!!eleven.

    Something like that, anyway.

    It's quite an interesting culture, in that it derrived from simple spelling mistakes, eg "pwn came from own, as a typing error, as "o" is by "p" on the keyboard.

    Same with 'the', being 'teh', as when typing fast, simple mistakes were made.

    Yeh very interesting BUT UBER IS 1337???!?!?!? What the hell I will defy anyone that me and my cousin made up that word while on holiday in looe. So many people say that word and WE made it up way back in 1995, and no we did not hear it we were sat down trying to think of different words ad cam up with uber.

    Oh really? Well the word Über; which has the same meaning in context, is German for "over". So one can assume that this meaning is used as the word "mega" is. I'll find more evidence later after my tea.

    yeah i've used the word Über for a long time, its one of those words my fiends were like "why do you say that" and i said "because it just sounds good, its a cool word"
    yeah i have to say sometimes l337 speak can get annoying, especially when some of my friends decide to think they're the best by typing symbols as well.
    for exampe l337 = |_££-|- which in the end just gets really confusing and takes more time to type and read/understand that its worth.
    if i ever do type in leet on the internet i dont go over the top, i dont do it to make it as challenging for everyone else to read as possible.

    Uber, as addis rightfully said is german for over, and is often used in snowboarding, skateboardig..any of the 'X-games', really..

    It can be used in the context of "woah dude, that trick was uber!/sick!/wicked!/"

    implying it was a death defying stunt, for example.

    Uber also meaning something is very, very cool, or awesome. Big, large, huge are also meanings, such as "dude, I have an uber hangover".

    yeah thats how i've always used it, to exaggerate something and say it was good, Uber means over but in the context that Waffle put it it means very/big/massive...i dont think about the german meaning when i use it.

    While we're on the subject of translation, check out Eurospeak, a tool for standardising English into a form our European cousins should find easier to learn and deal with!

    ahh cool

    i remember when my friend thought he was cool because he could type some stuff in l33t, he thought that using 5 all the time for 's' and 0 for 'o' was cool, he didnt realise that there was so much more and he didnt realise i could understand what he was saying and knew more than he did, lmao how i poked fun at him by makng things so hard to read and he would say "no thats not right, you're not sticking to the rules" HA what rules?one of the reasons why it was taken up is to get around rules, as a word searcher cant go through every combination for a word.
    for example if its set to look for the word "porn" there's different conbinations for each letter. (*some are more extreme and wren't widely used)
    P = ph or |^ or |* or |o or |^(o) or |> or |" or 9 or []D or |°
    O = 0 or () or ?p or ö
    R = |2 or P\ or |? or lz or [z or Я or ®
    N = // or ^/ or |\| or /\/ or [\] or or <\> or {\} or []\[] or ⁿ
    and thats not all of them there's also the whole thing written again but written as "pron" so that immediately doubles the amount of conbinations, think about how long it would take people to put in all the conbinations for a computer to search for (and thats only one word)

    Holy crap dude you are like the l33t master, I would be so confused if I say a paragraph written with stuff like that. I can see using numbers but is it easier to type "n" or []\[]. I guess that's not the point obviously.

    One thing: if you want to be taken seriously, don't use 1337 5p34k. It's like giving a graduation speech at Harvard in ebonics.

    Practically, you actually can make use of the lingo with passwords and some changes to the case of the actual letters. So, for the doubters, it's not completely useless.

    That's true I never thought of that anyway. Though I always keep the same password so I don't forget anyway. I'm not a paranoid person.
