Don't take this as solid gold, but The Register says that EFI may finally kick BIOS to the curb starting sometime next year.

Current versions of Windows do not support EFI, which is why Intel-based Macs require extra code if they're to run the Microsoft OS. It has been said that Windows Vista will not support EFI - the pre-release versions certainly don't seem to - but given the proximity of its early 2007 debut and the launch of Santa Rosa, that may change.

EFI has been talked about for quite some time, but getting to the point where it would be implemented has taken some time. I don't know all the details of EFI myself, but you'd be able to use your mouse and have more than 2 or 3 colors in use.
