this is my problem. its been happening for a few months now, and now that im reaching the time when i need to be outputting large amounts of work im hitting crisis point! i have no idea why its doing this, but wen i turn it on, its fine. i can use stuff etc. yey all is good! for about an hour...ish. then it goes haywire! all the icons vanish an on the taskbar the icons by the clock are replaced by black squares and the start button fails...the most notable is the log-off box. the blue background to it vanishes and it goes see-thru and the programs crash and windows dont open and...its barmy! wen i try to open stuff it comes up wiv 'is not a valid windows32 bitmap' an stuff like that...am desperate! aaaaany idea? hintin someone suggested graphics cache, which is now at 4 gig! an its not helpin. any ideas...thanx:D! byee x

What are you doing when this problem occurs? It sounds to me like the CPU has too many tasks to run.
You should check in the task manager (ctrl+alt+del) to see which programs are running. Click the processes tab, and click the CPU colomn to sort the processes in order. The process at the top is using the most amount to CPU time. If you do not need the program(s), you should disable them.
Do you have any scheduled tasks that run soon after you turn your computer on? Examples of this could be virus scanning. If you do not have a virus scanner, i'd recommend you get one. You may have malicious viruses and spyware installed, which are slowing down/crashing your computer.
I'd recommend you try Avast www.avast.com or AVG www.avg-free.com. They are both free antivirus programs.
Download and install Ad-Aware SE Personal to tackle any spyware you may have.
Generally, I think you are suffering from a badly configured system. Try downloading and installed Tune-Up Utilities 2006. It's free to try and you can get it at www.tune-up.com. It has a registry cleaner (Probably where most of your problems lie) as well as other system tweaks.

hey its ok. i had a look at a registry cleaner and the thing found like 1500 errors with it! i was quite pleased cos i thought i mite get it fixed? but then the program started demandin money. am 17...cant fork out fifty or so quid:( so...anyways. (if you know of a reputable registry cleaner that is free....? mite not be linked to the problem but am not happy bout all the errors...) er...yea ive looked at task manager an there is loadsa stuff running. i quit loads of them but it doesnt seem to help! i hav norton running (which is inherantly rubbish anyway) an i use antivir and adaware to get rid of viruses/adware. i used to hav summat to shoot the spybots etc. but it turned out to be one so i got rid. ill run a scan, see wot happens an if nothing happens ill go the whole hog an reformat it for the fourth time. am runnin outta time on so many things and i need it! anyways...thanx for the help! :D

What Nortons utilities are you running? Norton is very resource heavy, and your system can buckle quite easily if you don't have good hardware.
