I change my mind soooo much. But this time I think I'm on the right track, a laptop, of some sort seems like the best idea for my buck. So I looked online for several hours tonight and came across a few tablet PC's which I like a lot. They're very expensive unfortunately though:( I should have about $2000 to spend, and I really don't want to go over nor would my dad want me to. For the tablets I'm thinking something along these lines: Toshiba. It's not cheap but if I buy a gig of PC2 4200 off the Egg for $100 I'll have one spanking tablet. It won't exactly be a gaming machine but I can accept that, it will play the titles I throw at it well enough and I don't want 40mins of battery life or anything.
Alternatively I was thinking something like this on the notebook side of things: http://www.ibuypower.com/ibp/store/configurator.aspx?mid=158 talk about one beefy lap top for $1300! I'm just worried the battery life will be like 2hrs or less:(
My requirements are roughly as follows (for both laptops and tablets):
12'' screen at the very least
an X300SE or 6200TE video card or better (but not something too hungry)
    under 7 lbs.
The more under $2000 the better
A Pentium M, Althlon 64/Mobile, or Turion processor (Sempron would be fine if they came with good graphics cards).
    capacity for 2gigs of ram
Upgrade potential in the hard drive department (or at least a 60gig drive)
at least 3 hrs of battery life

So can any of you do me a favor and try to find a good match or two, tablets or notebooks. Thanks:)

What are you going to be usig it for? My laptop is Sempron with X700 mobile and gaming performance is pretty decent for a laptop for £625.
Do you want very good battery life, light laptop or more of a desktop replacement model?

I thought I covered my usage point but to be more specific: I want a fairly powerful laptop/tablet that will give me decent gaming performance but still be portable (under 7lbs.) and have respectable battery life (at least 3 hrs). So it's more or less the very middle of the road laptop with a thing for mild gaming. I don't want to pay a lot, less than $2000 but I still want it to last me a little while.
The Toshiba Tablet I linked is pretty cool but battery life isn't specified. Has anyone had any experience with tablets? How's the handwriting recognition on those anyway? Thanks.

Alright I'm thinking the tablet thing is going to get too expensive for what it's worth so I'll just get a nice laptop for hopefully around $1500 or so.
Has anyone had any experience with IBuyPower before? Or do you know anything about them. I've seen adds in mags and the specs are awesome, especially considering the prices!

I may very well order something from here but if you know any better sites post away!

I'd say screw gaming for laptops, that's for desktops. Go get an IBM ThinkPad!

It's sort of an intermediate semi-gaming oriented laptop. I don't expect it to take everything on max but I'll be desktop-less for a while afterwards so I want it to be pretty good anyway. So long as it gives me at least 3 hours I'll be okay, I'll just get another battery.
What makes the Thinkpads so good? They're pretty pricey for the specs anyway.
Dell has some good deals but I just hate the idea of getting a dell like so many people out there. I'd get on as a last resort as the price per performance ratio looks appealing.

Yeah they do seem to be, not the prettyiest but that's not the most important thing either. HP has some very nice laptops out there, if only the ones I was interested in had something better than an XPRESS 200 integraded gfx adaptor I wouldn't hesitate to order one of them. 100gig hard drives and Athlon 4000+ procs are pretty crazy for a sub $2000 laptop.
