Acceptable number of handles in task manager?

Under windows task manager what would an acceptable number of total handles and handles per process be?

I currently have about 10,000 handles, 470 threads in 35 processes.

I *had* about 2,000 handles in helpsvc.exe, killing it didnt seem to help much though. Below that are

svchost.exe, system, 0-2% cpu, 9,900k, 2028 handles
explorer.exe, current user, 0-2% cpu, 8,632k, 885 handles
 
The handles are not important. It is about the resources (% of CPU usage, MB of memory usage) that is used. If you have 1 GB of RAM, then the amount of memory that the processes use, shouldn't be more than about 600 MB.
