THE BUSH administration is apparently moving against plans by ICCAN to set up a .XXX domain which would force porn sites to be in a particular part of the net. Those in favour of the plan say that it will make it easier for parents to block kids access to Interweb sites that they do not think they should be looking at. However, according to Cnet, Michael Gallagher, assistant secretary at the Commerce Department, has asked for a hold to be placed on the idea. It says that it has received 6,000 letters and e-mails from individuals expressing concern about the impact of pornography on families and children. ICANN has already approved the idea and the move has put it in a slightly difficult position, particularly as it is fighting off claims that the US government should not intervene too much in its doings. If it backs down, ICANN could be perceived as bowing to political interference - but if not, it could alienate government officials when it needs them most to fight off UN attempts to take them over. The pressure is coming from right wing Christian conservative groups like the Family Research Council, which fears that "pornographers will be given even more opportunities to "flood our homes, libraries and society with pornography through the .xxx domain". Odd though, 6,000 people writing letters in a country of 295,734,134 does not seem that many. I think it'll help a little but there is absolutely TONS of sites that aren't porn sites but have lots of porn content! If i can stumble across them so can kids doing bible studies!
It would make it easier to block though. just block all domains ending with .xxx. but then it would make excuses harder as you can't just say "i thought it was a window cleaning business".
Hmmm, I hadn't heard about this. I don't, however, think the Bush administration is involved in this at all. It would be the, as you said, Christian extemeists and not the government. You have to remember that just because Bush is a Republican doesn't mean he is a Christian extremeist.
The problem is that porn sites wouldn't be mandated to move to the .xxx domain. If they were, that'd make this a really great idea. So far, if this idea gets off the ground, it's simply a matter of if they want to. I think Christian groups that oppose this are missing the point: get all porn sites under a single domain. The fact that this would make it easier to block porn outweighs the possibility of more porn sites, especially since they'd be blocking them all anyway. From a Christian perspective, this makes no sense not too. It's simply being masked under this.
This would never stop people browsing pr0n... ok, so all the addresses end in .xxx, but whats to stop your average moron from just entering the IP address in the address bar! and before anyone says your average moron doesn't know how to do this, just about everyone at my old school knew how to through a mixture of me telling people how simple it was, and people going "omg wtf hax" when the see apparently "blocked" games sites on my screen and just copied the address down... [ot] and not to mention the CGI proxy's i was using left right and centre, they where essential, even to get work done!... especially when "Content Keeper" started blocking things for reasons such as "educational" and "Political" (and even blocking google for a few days), but that just shows that they where basically building a profile on every ones web browsing by categorising every site and recording browsing! To me, that's a breach of privacy. Especially when you get pulled out of class for a "chat" because you have viewed sites for "Self Harm Support", even if you where only posting in "family and friends"! [Just about everybody knows someone who has, or does... i know allot of both] You could argue that if i had have been Self Harming that they believed it was in my best interest, i say bull :swear: , that's only made it worse for people i know (being forced to see a councillor).
