Hi all I have an AMD Athlon Dual Core Processor 4600+ (2.4Ghz). I wasn't sure what the socket was so I took it out and had a look at the pins, and found that it is a 939 socket, and that it is fitted into a DFI Lanparty UT motherboard that is socket 939 the problem is i want to upgrade the memory on my mobo. I have looked at ddr2 memory because it is faster and cheaper than ddr but my mobo doesn't support anything greater than 400Mhz which is the ddr. The mobo's i looked at that support 939 are the same, i was wondering if the cpu will fit into a am2 socket or is there a mobo that supports my cpu that supports ddr2 memory or am i going to have to get a new cpu. also the ram i aqm looking into is ddr2(800Mhz) Thanks all Andy
PC3200 (DDR400) is the fastest official spec for DDR from JEDEC, so nothing is preventing faster DDR, but there's not official spec past PC3200. Both the switch to DDR2 and an AM2 chip are impossible. DDR is 2.6V with 184-pins; DDR2 is 1.8V with 240 pins. Additionally, they're keyed differently so if you would manage to get a stick of DDR2 in a DDR slot, you'd probably destroy the stick and possibly the motherboard. AM2 is 940-pin, while 939 is, well, 939-pin. If you want DDR2, you'll need a new motherboard, CPU and RAM.
well there is another offer for you corsair has a twinx ddr-500 kits but you have to try to find them because they produced about 3 years ago so won't be that much easy to find the best for you is to save money
