AMD Question

Hello:

I wanted to know what's the difference between the Semptron and the Athlon processors. See, my Asus board says it supports up to AMD Athlon 3000+. I have a 2600+ now, and wanted to get a 3000+, but I can barely find an Athlon anymore. Can I use a Semptron on my MOBO instead?

My mobo is an Asus deluxe A7N8. Nforce chipset.

Thanks

But yes, you can use a sempron. but a 2600+ wil outperform a 3000 sempron. You might need to do a BIOS update on your motherboard, thats it.

The Sempron has 256kB of L2 cache; the Athlon 512kB. The Sempron has a 333MHz FSB; the Athlons have either a 333MHz or 400MHz FSB.

Socket A (and likely Socket 754) is the new value platform for AMD. The Socket 754 Semprons and Athlons share another difference: Semprons are exclusively 32-bit and do not have the 64-bit capabilities of their A64 counterparts.
