"Our friends at Extreme Systems managed to get a picture and some basic test of AMD's upcoming Centrino killer. AMD decided to call this CPU Turion 64. Did we say that we don't like the name?

Their Chinese reader posted pictures of a 1.6 MHz clocked Turion 64 CPU. This model will be branded 2800+ has 1M L2 cache and its build on 90nm core. The CPU is Rev 'E'. It will extend the life of Sock754 as Turion 64 uses this one to connect to a motherboard.

Maximum thermal dissipation is 25W and in this particular case used 1.392 V to operate at 1600 MHz. This CPU has great overclocking potential.

Those lucky boys overclocked this CPU to FSB 250MHz resulting in an amazing 2000 MHz. It's astonishing that this CPU is running with only 1.056V voltage to reach this milestone. It will sure get Centrino to run for its money. Looks like a nice alternative to us and Via and ATI are already ready with the chipsets. We want to believe that Nvidia has its own chipset to support Turion 64 CPU around the corner. I wonder will you be able to plug this CPU in Athlon 64 754 board? I don't see why not.

You can see the pictures and some additional details at this page. We expect to see some of the Turion systems at CeBIT."

Its always good to see competion in every area of the market. After so long without a decent competitor to the Pentium M in terms of power consumption, AMD may hopefully have a chip to match and possibly outdo the P-M. And the pics suggest the Turion may be a very good overclocker.
