WOW! This is big news! Great for users of open source operating systems. Soon we will be able to experience a proper out-of-the-box 3D experience using Linux.

I wonder how this news has gone down over at nVidia? I wonder whether it will prompt them to finally open up their drivers as well?

yeah, that is real crazy, man, as well as linux support, windows drivers should be real nice now to. So even if AMD didn't fix any of the problems with ATI drivers, regular people will make them sweet

This is great news. Full xorg 3D acceleration drivers for distributions might hopefully pave the way for nvidia to do the same.

What does this mean? Does it mean that I can get a document from AMD that tells exactly what the hardware does whenever a I/O read or write is made? Than can anybody with some C or ASM code adility write a good driver? What would happen if the other chip makers started to do this? Would it have a impact far beyound just the gaming world?

No, it seems to be that AMD will open source their existing graphics drivers.
