Hello everyone, I've been away for like a month (was on vacation in Ukraine visiting my Grandmas), but now I'm back and in need of help as always lol.

Okay, I turned off my automatic updates on my laptop (WinXP). As a result I now have that stupid icon of a red-colored shield with a little white x through it in my taskbar. And when I turn the computer on, a little notification bubble pops up from it every time to remind me (as if I have Alzheimer's or am just plain retarded) that my automatic updates are off and that my computer "might be at risk." And this shitty bubble doesn't even go away until I click the miniscule x in its upper right corner... :swear: So I want the stupid notification to stfu and not pop up ever again. I also want that stupid shield icon gone completely. It's useless!

Secondly, I have the same problem with the icon that tells me I don't have a wireless connection to the internet. I connected wirelessly recently and now I get that icon of a wireless connection with a red x next to it. And it, too, pops up a stupid notification box, as if I'm too stupid to realize what that icon with a red x next to it means. I don't want that notification to ever show its ugly self again either.

How do I get rid of these plagues?? Help greatly appreciated.

    Simple fixes.
Regarding updates: Go to system properties (control panel > System), Automatic Updates tab > then clcik 'Notify me but don't automatically download or install them'.
Regarding the wireless: You should be able to simply disable the connection in Network Connections via right click and choosing disable.

Hmmm, but that way I'll still get "notifications" about new updates that come available. I just got one as I was typing this, and now that yellow shield icon is sitting there. So that's not a total fix but still better than it was b4, so thx. Really wish there was an option to make it how I really want it, though: no notifications or anything at all. But it's still somewhat better than it was b4. And thx for the fix on the network one.

As far as i know, there is no sure fire way to turn off automatic updates
without receiving pop up dialog boxes. You are just going to have to live with it the way it is.

I had this problem re: automatic updates a while back. Fortunately, there is a permanent fix.

Go - Control Panel - Security Center - turn off automatic updates - click on 'Change The Way Security Center Alerts me' (lefthand side of the dialog box) - you should now have 3 options for 'Alert Settings' -Firewall, Automatic Updates & Virus Protection. Make sure that a tick mark is not placed in the 'Automatic Updates' box (it must be left blank) - then click okay & your done!

I don't for sure, but a similar procedure may help with the wireless connection alert issue.

Woot, that did it! No more update annoyance. Thanks so much, man!

I found something kinda like that in the network connections window, when u right click on "wireless network connection" and select properties: untick the box named "notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity." But I think I'll just use Pelvis's method and disable it every time to get rid of the icon too.

    Or just disable the service.
