I have an ECS KN1 Extreme motherboard that has an on board fan back where the usb/ps2/etc ports are. It's also got a little plastic cover over it. Recently it's started to vibrate, making this terribly annoying noise. Is it ok to disconnect the fan? I'm not really sure what it's cooling. Would it be easy to replace the fan? I'm hoping somebody else out there reading this has the same motherboard.

    Thanks,
    Brian

The fan cools the capacitors that are part of the power circuitry for CPU power. Unless you're heavily overclocking, it should be fine for that fan not to run. You might see if you can remove it and oil the bearings if you want.

try to have some oil dropped on the fan grill but be careful just one drop is enough it will extremely silence the fan
