Ok, before i start im going to say im sure there are many (free) services online that will do for me what im trying to set up (aka forums)... but where's the fun in that? :p This is mainly a bit of learning for me, as really, i know :swear: all about setting up servers! [But it will be used :p]

    Basic Server Spec:
    • AMD Semperon 64 2700+
    • 512MB RAM
    • 160 GB HDD
Current OS: Ubuntu 6.06 Server [64 Bit] LAMP Install

    Current Services:
    • SSH
    • Apache
    • MySQL
    • PHP
Im trying to set up a all in one 'wonderbox' :p

    I want to add/host:
    • IRC Server [No Idea]
    • Forums [No Idea, PHP based?]
    • Bit Torrent Tracker [No Idea]
    • FTP [No idea]
    • Email {POP & SMTP} [No Idea]
    • Proxy Server [No Idea, needs to be private] <-- for when im away from home>
By '[No Idea]' I mean HELP, SUGGESTIONS!!! :p

I'm also thinking about installing a GUI... it would nice to be able to 'see' my server :p (but sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop fails, im guessing i need to edit my respositories?).

Of Course, If anybody can think of anything else that might be usefull to add feel free to suggest it! (I thought about setting it up as a DHCP, DNS and Time server aswell.... but I'll get this lot done first!)

    Thanks

PS when im done i might turn it into a step-by step guide (as i have far too much spare time, and im getting a bit lazy!)

    • IRC Server - http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-mini/IRC.html#SERVERS
    • Forums - http://www.simplemachines.org/
    • Bit Torrent Tracker - mainline bittorrent, Azureus if you're using a GUI
    • FTP - ProFTPD
    • Email - Qmail or Postfix. If you want webmail, Horde also.
    • Proxy Server - SSL Explorer or Apache+Squid

If you want a GUI, I'd recommend that you a) use a lightweight one, and b) make it optional. In other words, have the system startup in runlevel 3, not runlevel 5. Start the GUI on a basis of necessity with the startx script.

BTW, if you want to use this project as an in-depth learning experience, I encourage you to go forward with it. Do your research on what you want to do and what each software package will provide. If you want a consolidated userbase, research that aspect as well.

On the other hand, if you want to set up a server for practical purposes, definately take a look at SME Server, which is CentOS 4.3-based and offers a very consolidated server package. It has unified file & print sharing, domain services, encrytped POP / IMAP / and webmail, web services, directory services, automated RAID construction, proxy capabilities, and more. Of course under the hood it's basically a RHEL 4 box, so it's not hard to add new services and capabilities.
