Hey, I have an Athlon XP 2800+ with a stock heatsink (see my specs to the left) and i want to get a new heatsink for it but my mobo doesnt allow for very big sinks and has no mounting holes so i need some advice on some good heatsinks that'll fit and maybe some to not buy! Thanks in advance!
You shouldn't look for big fancy ones then Look for ones like those you'll see in the link below, they are universal so if I'm correct you should be able to install them without much problems Coolers for Athlon CPU's For what reason do you want to replace your heatsink, are your temps going high? Because a friend of mine also had the same problem with his Athlon XP + stock heatsink, it was running around 70 degrees, I cleaned the heatsink thouroughly with a can of compressed air and now his temps are a lot less.
hey thanx marcus, i thought no-one was replying, no i want to overclock and the most stable i can get now is is about 198 on the FSB but the temps get to about 53 on idle and 65 on load! ive done heaps of oc'ing before but it is just a bit tricky with this board/HSF combo. The (CP5-8JDIF-0L) that you linked up looks like it'll fit! i also think i saw a zalman HSF somewhere for about 15bucks.
Don't ask me about overclocking, I'm a starter/n00b in that area, the computer I'm using now is my 1st selfbuild and I oc'ed it using the AI overclocking feature built in to my mainboard. I hope to be able to tweak my system some more in the near future, currently my AMD 4000+ San Diego core is on 2,7 (10% oc) and my CPU temps are around 30/35 degrees idle, 40/45 stressed, I had to add some extra/stronger coolers for that though. Thanks a lot for clicking the Thumb button! You're the 1st person awarding me that :crying:
well you were helpgul so it makes sense to say thanks! After hours of searching on the net i found one that'll fit just perfectly and perform well for what i need! (Thermalright SLK800) anyone heard of it?
UPDATE: I managed to find a different one- Thermaltake Silent Boost XP So far so good, it JUST fits on the mobo, getting idle temps of 28~30*C, from the original stock HSF of 33~36*C Although the HSF base is pretty rough so i'm gonna lap it a bit so hopefully i can drop those temps even further.
Those Silent Boost coolers seem to be cheap, effective, stylish and easily compatible with most motherboards.
Should be interesting to see the temp drops. You'll probably see 2-3*C in a temp drop, but you could see as high as a 5*C drop, depending on conditions.
Update: Lapped it down to a mirror finish, Took 40 minutes to complete. First with 600grit paper, then 800grit, then 1200grit and finally 1400grit and 1600grit! Temperatures aren't really conclusive at the moment as were having 37*C days here but on idle i'm getting (coldest part of the day {7am} is 25*C, warmest part of the day {2pm} is 34). In addition the load temps do go any higher than 38*C so i'm cheerin' Anyone else that hasn't lapped their HSF combo i highly recommend it as it really does improve performance providing you do it correctly.
