mmm my first post! Hello all,
I own an ATi 9800 pro "stock"(with upgraded artic cooling).
The story goes there is a switch on the rear of the cooler which having children was switched to low fan speed (you know whats comming!) I had just installed and was playing World of warcraft when the screen whent blank and into stand by mode....mmmm not good I thought so I tested the card in my wifes machine....same problem, no beeps machine seems to boot but no picture and the monitor is still in standby :(
the qustions to the Guru's are
1, do you think the card is dead
2, could it be repaired & if so where? (obviously cost is a big factor)
3, was this an over heat problem listening to the sympoms as I know ATi cards tend to run a bit hot! Hence the new cooler!!
4, :swear: kids

Thankyou for any help in advance

AMD64 3000-stock cooler, abit KV8max3, giel gig ddr3200, m/b sound, ?dead 9800pro!, 4xsata mator 120gig Raid and 2x160gig maxtor raid, pioneer DVD 108 lian li case and enermax 550 psu.

Due to the smaller manufacturing process, the 9800, while not ice cold isn't exactly a furnace. What I'm theorizing is that the core got chipped or something on the card was damaged somehow, so yes, it does sound like it's kaput.

A friend has offered me an nvidia based card untill I can upgrade....Think I might put an angle grinder through the old ATi card and video it!
Next stop PCIe!!
Thanx for the word.

Same thing happened to me, PC was crashing when in the middle of a game...couldnt figure it out till finally i got an ATI error message. Opened up the PC to take a look inside smelled burnt rubber odor like smell, touched the 9800pro card and it was HOT. Thought it was wierd because ive had this card for about 3 months and didnt have one problem till recently. So i left the side opened and threw a desk fan on it to keep it cool to see if that was the problem. It worked all day till tonight it finally died. PC crashed for the last time, when i booted up all i get is "out of range" on the screen. Hopefully i can get a replacement from ATI

Word for those who dont know....first time you PC crashes out of the middle of no where, open that baby up and take a look. I let it crash one to many times and now im probably out $200 :swear: :swear:
