Ati Radeon Drivers

Hi there,

I've just upgraded to Windows XP, and I'm wondering which driver version should I be using for my Radeon 64Mb DDR VIVO card?
Can I use the lastest wxp-w2k-catalyst-7-94-030917m-011434c.exe
or do I need to use an older driver for this old board?

Ati don't split their drivers by specific board on their website, and since this board is discontinued, I'm not sure if the latest drivers are applicable.

When ATi released the Radeon 8500, they renamed all their old Radeon's under the 7x00 line.
As long as the driver is supporting the 7x00's (x=1,2,5...), it should work with your card. It'll state the eqivalent Radeon 7x00 card yours is comparable to in Device manager tho.

If there are problems, you'll have to play around with different drivers, but ATi's cleaned up their act, so I don't see that being a big issue.
 
Thanks, that clears up a few things. It would be good if ATI put a notice on the product page!

Is it always good to update drivers? I'm having a problem with a game but the drivers I'm using are way newer than the game already. Is it sometimes better to use older dirvers?
 
Big B,

Looking at your specs I see you're using a similar motherboard to me (I have a GA-7VA). Would you recommend any particular card for this (I should really upgrade).
I've found that some combinations against all laws of logic just don't want to play nice together.
 
BTW jonfitt, I'd really recommend OmegaDrive's ATI drivers over the real ATI ones any day. This guy actually fixes bugs in the retail drivers and improves game performance (but not benchmarks). Give 'em a whirl: omegacorner.com.
 
I'm running a Radeon 8500LE with the board. I've not had a problem with this system since I put it together. I haven't tried anything newer in it yet, but for a cheap upgrade to some Direct X 8 hardware, that'd be the way to go. It's not the fastest speed demon, but I can play all the games I have right now without any issues. I like to run my games at 1280x1024 if at all possible, and as long as I don't turn on any AA, I'm okay. This is also 32-bit, BTW and with the detail cranked up.

I'm not using the latest ATi drivers, and off the top of my head, I can't say which ones I'm using, besides ones from ATi. They've been working for me, so I haven't seen the need to change them.
 
Like everything else imo, if you don't have any problems with the drivers you're using, you should stick with what you have.

I'm still on the omega 3.6 and they work fine for me. I haven't even tried the 3.8 yet
