Ati Radeon Graphics Problems

Hi

I have a strange problem that I have traced to my graphics card or drivers. I run an older PC with fully up-to-date Win XP Home SP3. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon 9550 which has been in the machine for 3 years; it connects to a flat screen via DVI.

A couple of mornings ago, after switching on, the screen was blank but the HHD light would flicker now and then.

I re-booted in safe mode and when the driver loading got to Mup.sys, Windows hung for some time before eventually starting successfully in safe mode.

I could not find anything definite about Mup.sys and after much fiddling decided to re-install Windows. I did a careful re-install, checking I could successfully re-boot after each addition. When I loaded the graphics, the system hung with all the previous symptoms. A system restore saw the PC working. I downloaded the up-to-date graphic drivers from ATI, same problem.

My last resort was to open the machine and clean everything, but the graphic drivers are still causing the same problem.

I am running on the basic Windows graphics with a stuttering screen display.

Can anyone solve this problem for me?

Thanks

Hello how far have you got with the windows install have you put your service packs back on ? the only thin i could suggest is to install just the drivers for your card and not the catalyst suite. Sometimes the drivers that come with the cd are old i always download the most compatible drivers from the ATI or NVIDIA website

Hi

I got Win XP up-to-date, set a Restore Point and tried loading the drivers, system unhung. I restored the system, downloaded the new drivers..... same story.
I reckon the graphics card is damanged, maybe due to the build-up of dust on the heat sink caused a component to fail, although there is no sign of this.

In the end, re-installed windows again and bought a new graphics card.

Problem solved
