OK, ive always had perfect dvd backups using the 'old-school progs' ripit4me, dvddecrypter and dvd shrink - so ive got all the .vobs ready to rock.

You often see avi's around that fit on one CD ie 700mb or split into two 'CDs' what software do people use to do this so well? All the encoding programs i've used in the past end up with either horrid quality or stupidly large files.

Is there a decent (hopefully freeware) encoding program about that people tend to think of as the best & use that I have just 'missed' over the past years?

I _think_ the name of the software used to make those 700mb AVIs is called Auto Gordian Knot, or AutoGK. Best to use xvid instead of divx, it's much better, or if you want higher quality an h.264 codec would be best. The high quality open source h.264 codec is x264. These files come in larger mind, but results are usually excellent.

    Cheers for the info addis,

I tried it over night and the video sound quality is excellent even at 700mb for a full movie, however the sound is out of sync and not 'just' out - more like a couple of minutes :s

Will play around again with it later.....
