Hi, I've been experiencing some slowness from my hard drive. I bought the drive off eBay and it was listed as refurbished. I've used HDDlife and noticed that drive health and performance were both reported at 49%. Here is the full log. Thanks.
i personally don't recommend buying from ebay especially a HDD because you don't know the HDDs true history, but you have the drive, is there anything you can do now ? . . . yes as it's a Seagate click here to goto seagate's site & download seatools & totally blank (destroy all data) on the HDD then install the OS from scratch & any other software you like, obviously each HDD manufacturer has their own utils to recertify their drives doing this recertifies a seagate drive as, ok BTW: it will take a long time, the last time i blanked a HDD i personally used D-Ban & it will be best to leave it blanking overnight and make a backup if you need the data
good look BTW: it's much easier than it sounds & appears to be, just be careful at boot that your choose the correct HDD, i learnt that lesson the hard way
Ok, it took 6hours 40 mins The health status and performance indicators have bumped up slightly to 54%. One thing I noticed is that the RAW Read Error has jumped up nicely to 96% but the seek error rate is around the same as before at 55%. Here is my new log. Is there anything else I can do to improve the Seek Error Rate or am I best off just forgetting about it until I can save a few quid to get a new HDD? Thanks
I'd personally get a new HDD, sounds like a dud. Make sure to back up a lot until you get the new HDD.
not neccisarily purely from a smart point of view Seagate are not the best drive, but i personally will only buy Seagate drives, however, i have a hitachi drv in my Vista box (birthday present) anyway here's my results Code: HDDlife Project 3.1.0.157 (c) 2004-2007 by BinarySense Inc., http://www.hddlife.com, mailto:[email protected] 26/03/2009 10:22:28.366 Try checking MSI devices... failed! Thanks for your help. I seem to have sorted my problem. The problem seemed to be the molex connector. I don't have any sata power cables off my psu so I have one of those molex to sata connecter things. Anyway, I remembered that I had a little bit of a performance issue with a hard drive a while back with the same psu. One of the molex connectors was a bit dodgy and my pc was always stuttering. I guess I was using the same connector so I tightened to female prongs in it and the male bit from the sata side fit nice and snug and my pc performance has gone right up to the point where I can do things normally again with no issues. So, a new psu is what I'll get next as this one, although working fine, is quite old and very noisy.
