Hey all, general question. I have a gigabyte motherboard and phenom ii x4 940 that I have been using as a home server for about 9 months. To justify leaving it on with so many free cpu cycles, I usually have seti@home crunching numbers pushing all four cores to 100%. I have run it this way since day one, with long stints of no restarts. The last stint was 98 days uptime at which point a voltage regulator burnt up overnight. The system turns on then turns off. It was a cheapo $50 board from newegg, never overclocked. Whats the chance that it didn't take the cpu with it? I want to buy a new board to test but cant afford to have it kill it, don't know how well a company would like me returning a blown board after one day. Thanks in advance!
Wow, you're quite the risk taker! I'm surprised the whole case didn't go up in flames. Data crunching for that long even with a water cooler, which i assume you didn't have, is harmful. Best way to check is to take the fan/heatsink out of its place and look for dark spots around or on the CPU. Other symptoms could be dried thermal paste.
I guess I expected more of newer tech. I had a dual xeon server doing the same thing for 2 yrs. Longest stint was 150ish days before the power went out and my ups ran out. I dont see the issue though with running the cpu at full load if there is adequate cooling. Im starting to wonder if the power supply played a role :/
