Best free firewall for free antivirus?

I am using Win XP, and it comes with a firewall, which I have never really done anything with.
A friend got a virus, even though he had Norton on his system, and later was told that a firewall would have helped him.
I heard that if you are using free anti-virus, that it is better to use the free Zonealarm firewall then the WinXP firewall.

Any 3rd party firewall application such as Zonealarm would be better than Windows Firewall protection.
Get a free antivirus such as Microsoft Security Essentials. Get yourself a nice IP blocker like PeerBlock. Finally, get a nice free firewall like Zonealarm.

I would suggest Comodo AV and firewall or PC tools Internet Security.. I don't care for ZoneAlarm , it has way too many bugs and I have had allot of problems with it..

I can't give you advice on firewall, I use windows 7 built in firewall and I'm happy with it.

I use avast antivirus and that's been very good to me.

With that in mind though, I'm a bit of a tech enthusaist so I have afeeling for what to trust and what not to trust, I'm not going to open suspicious looking files that come bundled in torrents for example.
