As a Linux newbie, I've been trying to backup my whole Linux (Mandriva 2006) partition. I have fully read the associated help files, which are very easy to follow. However, when I click the "Backup Now" button, I just get an error message that says "No changes to backup." I guess I must be doing something wrong, as the instructions for doing a backup seem very straightforward. I would be grateful of any help. In the interim, I'm using my disk-imaging program in Windows to backup the Mandriva partition, but I'm reluctant to carry on using that method indefinitely, as I think it would be good to get away from my, well - sort of 'dependency' on XP. Cheers, David
What do you save your backups to? (DVD +/- R, USB Hard drive etc) In ubuntu i use dd & nc (netcat) to make a complete disc image (of the clean install, saved to another computer over the network) and the rsync to backup my home folder... If your saving to a USB HDD then you wont need to use netcat!
Hi, Thanks for replying. I've tried usind DVD RW+, HDD & the USB External Drive to backup to, but still got the error earlier message I mentioned at the start of this thread. However, today, I again tried using the USB Drive to do the backup. It seems to have worked, as I checked the backup "Configuration File", and it states that there are backups to restore. Can't think why it did not work originally - maybe a system glitch. I then checked out the "Restore All Backups" button (which did not show up before, as a message said 'there were no backups to restore'), so I guess things might be okay now. I did not try a restore, as I did not want to screw-up my installation. However, I guess there's only one way to find out if it's going to work! As I have said, I've got my Mandriva partition fully backed up via Windows (using my disk-imaging software), so I'm covered . However, it would be nice to know that I could fully restore the Mandriva partition from within Mandriva, using its backup facility.
