Im a computer noob Computer Specs INTEL Pentium4 64BIT 3.0Ghz 775 Pin & 2MB L2 Cache 800Mhz FSB ASRock 775VM800 Socket 775 Prescott Supported Motherboard 775 Pin Socket, 800Mhz FSB, DDR400, 8XAGP, ATA133 & SATA, 6xUSB2.0, 5.1 Sound 2GB DDR400 RAM (1GB Pair) 80GB Hard Drive ATA133, 7200 RPM 16 X DVD+/-RW DUAL LAYER Drive 6 x USB2 Ports, LAN Port & 5.1 Sound Real256E 3D Graphic controller Sharing Only 64MB (onboard graphics) 3.5'' Floppy Disk Drive 450W Silent PSU X-BLADE Case What happened in Brief: I installed a new heatsink/fan for the cpu, put the computer on monitor didnt come on from standby, no beep as usual from the compter.. is there something wrong with the motherboard or CPU? In detail: Here what happened a friend told me i should change the standard intel heatsink/fan as it is too loud. So i took his word and brought an 'artic coolin freezer pr0 7' from ebay. It got delivered yesturday, and i thought ill install it same day. I read teh instructions and it looked abit complex but i thought what the heck ill give it a try. I didnt have any anti static wrist bands but some one told me just touch a radiator or something metal and itll discharge you of any built up static on your clothes etc. After doing this, i toop out all the wires from the back of the computer, opened the case, and pulled out the square power wire which goes to the motherboard (i think it powers the CPU) then i pulled out the power wire for the heatsink/fan, then i got a screwdriver and loosended the clip holiding the heatsink/fan. After doing this i pulled out the heatsink/fan which needed abit of a pull, but it got out finally. After this i got a tissue and removed all teh thermal paste on the CPU as the instruction indicated. Some was stuck on so i scrapped it off with a tissue over my finger. Then i got the new heatsink/fan checked how it needed to be positioned, and got the clips ready to put in the holes. It took a while finding the holes for the clips, i managed to get one but the rest where not finding the holes, so i kept pushing it to see if i could find it but no luck, i was just puching it against the motherboard. so i took it back out and i realised that clip wernt fully open so i opened them up, put it back in and managed to find all the holes, i pushed the clip in and they locked. then i put the power wire for the heatsink/fan in and the square motherbaord power cable! I connected everything to the back of the case. I kinda put the VGA cable abit tight. Put the computer on and all started running, the new heatsink came on and seemed to be working fine, fans came on, blue case fans and everything, but the monitor didnt wake up from standby unlike any othertime you put the computer on! and also normally you hear a beep when the computer starts booting up, but not this time! I left it on but nothing happned just the fans and PSU you can hear and the monitor had no soruce.. so i thought it might be something to do with this heatsink/fan, so i disconnected everything, opened the case, took out the new heatsink/fan and put back the intel heatsink/fan and Put every back together.. Same problem monitor didnt come on, no beep as usual.. nothing just the psu noise and lights from the case fans... _________________________________________________________________________________________________ So does anyone know what it could be?? have i destoryed my motherboard, or pulled or moved something out by accident? or could it be the CPU or anything else!? Please help ASAP, my dads going nuts because i busted the comp i was thinking it might be the motherboard and i need to buy a new one...
One thing to try would be to clear your CMOS, theres usually a small jumper on the motherboard somewhere that clears the CMOS. Move the jumper to the alternate position and try again. If you can't find it then take out the small battery in the motherboard and put it back in.
Make sure the HSF is seated on the CPU properly. This is a common error and will cause these symptoms.
None of those worked but dont worry i took it down the local computer shop, they chekd it tested a new mobo out, and it worked fine. so brought a new mobo now and its fixed
