Hi! A week or so ago, I updated my BIOS (I have a ASUS P5VDC-MX) from the ASUS homepage (dled the ROM and used the via CD supplied ASUS updating software). When I restarted my PC, it said something like "checksum error, press [blah] to use default settings". after that this never reoccoured and I'd say that the PCs more stable.

So, I'd like to know wether it jumped back to the old BIOS, or the settings in the new BIOS were not supported. Should I downgrade to the original BIOS? OR can this quietly but steadily in the background be damaging my mobo/chipset?

    Thanks!

In your case, I think your settings were wiped when you upgraded the BIOS. The error refers to incorrect or incomplete settings in the CMOS. Simply reseting the BIOS as you did and then re-entering the settings should be OK.
