I have just purchased an external DVD writer. However when I plug it in to my PC, I get the dreaded Blue screen of Death!! My PC runs on Windows EXP, so I thought I could just plug in and go! Can anyone help me

do you plug it in when the pc is in windows, or before you boot up?

did it come with any drivers, even tho XP is "plug n play", it still needs a driver.

Hi thanks for your reply. Ive tried plugging it in when the PC is off and on, but I get the same results. The confusing thing is that it works when I plug it in to other peoples computers, stating "New hardware detected". The error code on the blue screen ends in 000E if that helps

sounds like you have a dodgy connection on your PC, or maybe a dodgy windows installation - try repairing it?

I have just realised that my computer runs off service pack 2 and the others I have tried it on run off service pack 1. Any suggestions to overcome this?

    uh reinstall windows?

there are ways but its probably more hassle than its worth.

What make is the dvd writer? I'll have a look and see if there are any other users with the same problem.

Its a pioneer 106 DVD writer. I would appreicate it if you could see if anyone had any similiar problems. I have been advised that I could remove service pack2, install a driver and then reinstall service pack 2. Ive heard service pack to is renowned for having problems with software and hardware??
    Sorry im a novice!

    No, I couldn't find anything.

Perhaps you should try a fresh XP install without SP2, see if it works.

If it does, then install SP2 anyway, but through Windows Update.

If it crashes again, then you'll have to leave out SP2. (I'm saying reinstall it all so we can rule out a faulty XP installation first)
