I have a problem which I think is due to my HD:

When I tried starting up yesterday, the computer was normal untill the XP loading screen appeared, with the Windows logo and the blue progress bar, but after a second or two of that screen the computer restarts. Now it is the same whatever mode I try to select to start it in.

    I have tried:

    - Putting in the XP disk and trying to Repair or Reinstall, but each time it says something along the lines of 71698 MB at 0 disk 0 id 0 bus on atapi and hangs.
    - Installing XP onto my backup HD (Primary slave) to see if I can access the faulty one as an extra drive, but when the faulty drive is plugged in from startup the system goes to a black screen and hangs, and when I plug it in while XP is running the system hangs.

I would love to do an F9 Xpress recovery, but pressing F9 gets no response.

Evidently the problem is with my Maxtor 80GB HD, can anyone advise me how to break past this hanging problem so that at the very least I can retrieve the data on it?

    Many thanks,

    James

I don't think changing anything in the BIOS will help and you've already tried recovering so... Seems like you'll have to format mate.
