    Hey guys,

ugh, not sure if I am posting in the right place or not but anyway, I've just run into a worrying problem tonight.

A bit of background, I have an asus A8N-E motherboard, amd 4600+, couple of SATA hdds, and 1gig of ddr400 ram. Today I went out and purchased another stick of ram and was planning on installing vista. The stick was a different brand, but still ddr400. When I put it in, seemed like something was wrong, so I rebooted and tried without the stick. Went up ok, so I tried moving the new stick into a different slot. I managed to boot up, and verified that 2gig ram was being picked up by the pc. So I rebooted and put in my vista disk.. seemed as though something was playing up and not booting properly again. Fiddled around with ram for a while, taking some out, switching slots etc, but now

I am unable to boot the system at all. If I power on, I hear the power supply start up, and the cpu fan starts running. I dont even get anything on the screen.

If I had of blown the motherboard, is there anything I can check to verify this? I mean, I didnt hear any noises, looking over the board I dont see anything (not sure if its something id be able to see). Is there any other possiblilties with the cause? Do I have any chance of getting the system back up and running?? The A8N-E is kind of an old board now, seems hard to find.

Dont wanna have to go buy a mobo and find out that doesnt help, let alone FIND a motherboard compatible with my hardware.

Please, any help or questions will be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

Sounds like the new memory is just plain incompatabile with the old memory or you might need to set the voltage and timming manually. Try just putting the old memory back in and reset the bios and see if it will boot.

There should be a jumper near the motherboard battery. Says something like clear cmos. If it has 3 pins you move the jumper over for about 30 seconds then move it back. If not just remove the motherboard battery for the same amount of time then replace. Only do this with the computer off and unplugged.

what will this do though, will it remove drivers? Affect hdds?

No, it just resets the bios on the motherboard back to defaults.

Just recheck your connections, IDE - Sata and power cables, reseat your video card. Are you getting any beep tones?

no beeps, ive been removing hdds, removing video card on and off. Nothing seems to resolve it. I was able to boot up my hdd with xp on it once.

Ive also noticed when i push down on my cpu fan it can turn off. I took off the heatsink, nothing looked bad at all, no dust or anything. The thing we cant forget here, is that this happened after i tried inserting new ram into the system - so things like cpu having dust under it are unlikely causes.

A few times it hasnt even powered, like you will hear the initial fan of the power and 1 second later its off. I am really not a hardware tech, (im a coder ;p), but this makes me think it could be the power supply? If you think it could be something else, lemme know tho, i really dont want to go buy something for nothing right now.

Well I mean yes it could be your P/S but I have never saw adding a stick of ram killing the P/S. I guess who knows, god could have killed it at the same time;) I just think you have knocked something loose or not hooked something back up right.
