basically most or all browsers are based on: Trident - Microsoft Gecko - Mozilla or both trident & gecko, although i think browsers based on both were probably originall based on gecko and have support for trident added to them although there are not many browsers based on both trident & Gecko, to find out which your browser is based on look here personally i use Kubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn & i use Swiftweasel browser, but there are a few browsers available even if you still use XP, some browsers to consider for all OS (Operating Systems) Firefox - very good, a favorite of most users, tabbed browser (to enable you to browse multiple webpages at the same time) & an integrated download manager, uses the mozilla browser engine it also has password manager & integrated search facility Opera - also very good, tabbed browser with integrated download manager and an integrated mail client (to receive emails) it also has password manager & integrated search facility, a nice browser but the mail sorting is weird to start with & it hasn't improved for me, although i should really give it a chance IE7 not good & insecure Avant - personally i've never used Avant so reviews welcome Netscape - i haven't used the latest incarnation of nutscrape but they have a reputation for being bloted Camino - only for a Mac, personally i don't have a Mac & haven't used any Mac emulation software like Sheepshaver or PearPC, i haven't tried it Seamonkey - available from mozilla for *nix, Win, Mac, O/S 2, but it would benefit from the use of Firefox add ons / extensions, but not a bad browser Swiftweasel - a very good browser for *nix but its compatible with all Firefox add ons / extentions NotJustBrowsing - for Win98 & above Swiftfox - a very good browser that is based on mozilla but is only available on *nix (until someone compiles the source for other OSs, but i'm unsure how long this project will last as support was withdrawn at the end of april but the developer must have changed his mind because updates began arriving, i did use Swiftfox, it is very good, basically Swiftfox is Firefox but for *nix Galeon - a basic browser that is very capable, only for *nix but stuff just works Epiphany Browser - a simple browser that just works, very similar to Galeon Safari - Safari was originally only for a Mac however it has recently being recompiled by Apple (i think) to work on Win Maxthon - only for Win but i haven't tried it Flock - its based on the mozilla browser engine & is more of a community browser (makes it easy to keep a blog updated) Iceweasel - Iceweasel is for *nix, although i haven't used it there are so many good browsers like some listed above and Konqueror for *nix BTW: please add a review of your favorite browser, thank you for reading this very brief intro to browsers
I very nearly posted a question asking what browsers are available a couple of days ago but didnt. Opera does too much! and my install of firefox is painfully slow. Like 5 secs for a letter to appear on the screen sometimes. I think its fireftp, it keeps on spannering itself and crashing. Plus it uses about 25-30mb ram. Ill have a look through the list... cheers.
Iceweasel is the official Debian version of firefox, i believe it was created because you cant take the firefox source code and modify it (or fix bugs / vulnerabilities) and still call it firefox, only source code / binaries release by Mozilla can be called firefox. Debian distribute firefox under the name iceweasel so that the community can fix bugs vulnerabilities themselves and release them without having to wait for the official (fixed) version. to sum it up Iceweasel = Firefox && Firefox = Iceweasel, as far as i know extensions, add ons etc are 100% compatible. [OT] Don't quote me on that, double check it [/OT]
yeah, Iceweasel is Firefox for Debian, if you split the names up Fire fox Ice weasel they named it Ice weasel because Ice is not Fire & weasel is not fox, Ice could be seen as the opposite of Fire, but how is weasel the opposite of fox Edit: i think your right, i'll get Iceweasel and find out Edit: yeah, IW does work with FF addons
