I'm going to go on Newegg today and look at components with my friend as he's tired of bumming around with his dying Mac. Here's what I'm thinking of getting him, his budget is about $1000.

    Athon 64 3000+ Venice

    X800GT 256MB GDDR3

    GIGABYTE GA-K8N Pro-SLI Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX

NEC Display Solutions AS900-BK Black 19" CRT Monitor

    HITACHI Deskstar 7K250 HDS722516VLSA80 -13G0254 160GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drive

    BenQ Black IDE DVD Burner

OCZ Performance Series 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit

A-Top XBlade AT859A-BK Black/Silver Computer Case With Side Panel Window

    Logitech X-230 32 Watts RMS 2.1 Speaker

    Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 ATX12V 500W Power Supply

CREATIVE DI5652-1 56Kbps PCI Bus (Plug and Play) Modem

Logitech Internet Pro Desktop 967457-0403 Black 103 Normal Keys 8 Function keys Function Keys PS/2 Wired Standard Keyboard Mouse Included

How does that sound? Should be around his max budget mark with shipping.

Get a seagate HD, they're very good and slightly quieter than WD ones.
Also get a dvd drive from Philips, Sony, Plextor or Liteon etc, they'll have more advanced burning options.

I chose Hitachi not WD:) Got good reviews so it should work well for him. So long as he can burn DVD's and CD's he'll be happy. He's pretty new to computers so I don't think he'll miss any of the bells and whistles but thanks anyway.
