Cable Tester?

You can do it with a spare ethernet socket and a meter (an electricians meter, not a meter stick!)
just pair up the wires in the socket, make sure you have some order to this as you need to know which pairs contacts to test on the other end!!!
Its what i used anyway, and i did have a broken cable, the whole house has been wired, the cables run through the loft! (and it HAD to be the longest cable didnt it!!!) bah... hope this is good enuf for what you need it for (as all it can test for it broken wires...)

A cheap continuity tester only costs <$20/USD, so it'd be worth it to just buy one if you'll use it often. I got mine about 7 years ago, and it's still got the original battery. It tests USB cables, coaxial, Cat5/6, and BNC.

It's basically a once off thing. Some of my computers are experiencing some network bog downs and i can't find the problem so i thought of a software tester. The cheapest hardware tester i found is $42AUD but i only need it once.
