Sony Vaio? Forgive my ignorance but I'm assuming that's a laptop. I don't know a whole lot about laptops but I think the connections for these devices are vendor-specific. That means it should be easy enough to upgrade it so long as you get one that has a compatible connection type (so for example a DVD-RW for a Compaq laptop may not fit into yours). Have you had a look at Sony's website?

I don't see why not. Just unscrew the old drive, unplug and remove. Put in dvd drive, plug in and screw it in.

Good, that makes your job a lot easier. Does it use a standard IDE interface? If so then upgrading is a fairly trivial exercise.

yeah, just buy a dvd-rw drive, and install any drivers needed, you might want to uninstall any old drivers

i have seen slimline drives somewhere, but that wouldnt solve the problem of it being too wide :x: erm, try looking on the sony site or contacting a dealer and see if you can pick up a compatible one from them.

I think you are just confused.... All CD/DVD drives that I have seen (internal) will fit into any standard case. Is there another size?

5.25" is ATX width for any internal optical drive. Any ATX dvd-rom drive will fit :)

    Unless sony doesn't follow ATX.

ATX optical drives are around 4cm tall :)
