I've been trying to install the (latest, I think) Firefox 1.5.0.5 on Mandriva 2006. I downloaded the tarball and untared it, but it does not create a directory from which I can then go on to install the browser.

I have searched out how to do go about installing tar.gz files on the Net and am seemingly following the correct procedure. Can anyone help?

    Cheers,

    Dave.

I don't think you need to upgrade manually. Usually, your distribution's automatic updates feature should do it for you.

I've never really used Mandriva that much, so I can't say for sure. But I know that SuSE and (X/K)Ubuntu would upgrade automatically.
