How much RAM do you have? Also, you might want to try a different CD and CDROM drive.

    Download the alternative Install CD

It's a text based installer, so you don't need to boot into Ubuntu first

With 256, please try Xubuntu instead of Ubuntu. It will make better use of your resources. :)

Even with 256mb RAM, you shouldn't have much problem installing Xubuntu from a live disc. But Ubuntu uses Gnome by default, which is... well, it's awful, and it won't run well on your hardware either.

Dual booting is very simple and you will not need to switch cables. Are both hard drives on the same channel (share a common cable)?

What commands are you refering to? Installation should be very simple but I personally have never installed xubuntu. The installer should set up your dual boot options with minimal input from you.

If you install Ubuntu and find it's too much for your computer, you can install Xubuntu on top by using the command:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
