cd dvd player in dell 8300 plays video but no audio after reformat and installation of xp and all the drivers.
theres no cable connected from the mb to the cd dvd plyer, i thought it was that till i read this:

Microsoft® Windows® Millennium, Windows 2000, and Windows XP operating systems ship with DAE (Digital Audio Extraction) enabled. The analog cable is not be necessary when using DAE.

Earlier versions of Microsoft operating systems or other non-Microsoft operating systems may need the analog Audio cable to play CD audio.

Do I have to enable DAE or something? Can't figure it out.

What about your sound card? Have you installed the drivers for that or the on-board sound?

You don't have to enable DAE because it's already enabled natively. Unless you've got a very old CD-ROM drive, yours should work fine.

hi, is it onboard sound (on the motherboard) if so, what chipset is it, or if its a sound card what card is it, because to me it sounds like it could be a faulty sound card or something with the drivers.

right, but what type of onboard sound (realtec A/C 97) or what is the make and model of the motherboard (or BIOS ID string)

presumably your using win2k or winXP, because that particular onboard sound is NOT compatable with Win9x, beyond that i don't know, sorry, perhaps someone else can help you
