Hello all.Ok I reformatted myPackard Bell PC and re-setup Windows XP i made a list of all the hardware in device manager and my cd was listed as the following :- H+H DVD ROM DVD-415D SCSI CD-ROM and also HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC 4320B Now having re-formatted I want to setup up my display adapter and modem etc etc but my CD drive won't recognise some CD's and will recognise others. And the first reference under the device manager is not listed as it was above just the second?????? when I put in some CD's the icon under My Computer will change to that CD's icon but other CD's it will not change and when I browse the cd it opens as a blank window as if nothing is on the cd. Please help I can't understand why its not just using its standard drivers and working never saw this before. Checked cables but this obviously can't be problem cos it is reading some of the disks. Thanks all.
You might try downloading the official drivers for them and not use windows drivers! It also sounds like windows is set to not monitor drives for media change, i will look into this!
The problem is that its just an OEM machine with no actual manufactuer mentioned on the drive like samsung or aopen or whatever so i don't know where ican get drivers from and anyway i can't setup the modem on the pc cos it won't read the cd - kinda drive ya mad!!!! Never seen this before like normally the standard windows drivers work. Bugging me big time!!!:x:
you could try PC Wizard to give you a little more information about your system, it should give you model information about your drive(s) then go on google and search for drivers there.
Well for starters you listed the drive model numbers in your first post and secondly your on the net now! www.driverguide.com should have them, also the drives manufacturers webiste should have them, Samsung (H+H DVD ROM DVD-415D) and LG (HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC 4320B). Im pretty confident if you get the drivers they should work properly again!
Thanks pelvis i tried driverguide with no success but didn't try the manufactureses website i'll try that and see what happens. i'm on another pc now thats how i'm on-line can't connect to internet cos other PC won't read my ISDN modems CD!!! Caught everywhere i turn so hopefully if the drivers arn't too big i'll be able to put them on a floppy! but thank you for your help.
Have you considered that your drives might have started to go out? I'd try other optical drives in that system and/or try your drives in a known working system. As far as downloading stuff to a floppy disk, you might want to pick up a thumb drive. They're really handy if you get in a pinch like you are now.
