    Hi all

I am a bit lost here....
I have a laptop (running win2000) which sports the TEAC DW-224E.
Under the device manager, the primary IDE channel is set to 'Ultra DMA mode'
But the secondery one is set to PIO mode and I cannot set it otherwise.

This combo drive replaced the CD-ROM drive which was originaly in the laptop and when it was installed, UDMA was possible then

Does this mean that the combo drive can only use PIO transfer mode?
Is this something a firmware upgrade can fix?
I found a firmware upgrade but it does not mention this issue and I do not want to take the chance of a dead drive if it cannot resolve the 'PIO only' issue anyway.... no wha u meen?

    Many thanks!

Is DMA enabled in the BIOS for both channels?

ooops, never bovered to check that!

I will check and post back!

    Thanks Mega....

UPDATE - The :swear: BIOS does not even mention IDE channles, let alone got the option to enable or disable....
This is an old M300. I know you are quite familiar with old HW mega.... is there another way to enable DMA for the drive? Or maybe not with this particular type of laptop?

    Thanks anyway!

I replaced the CD-ROM drive in my Armada with a DVD-ROM drive. DMA continued to work fine.

Unfortunately I don't have the laptop around to inspect it, as I've given it to one of my family members.

How have you connected the combo drive? Are you using the Mobile Expansion Unit, or a USB port?

In either case, try uninstalling the combo drive and restarting the computer. The combo drive will be reinstalled automatically when Windows reboots. Hopefully DMA will be detected as being supported by the drive.

I can't remember for sure, but the mobile expansion unit may require drivers. You could try uninstalling them as well, then reinstalling them.

EDIT: I am not even sure if DMA is available for USB drives. You know any different?

    Thanks for this mega.

As I am not using a USB drive, I am assuming, by process of elimination, that I am using the expansion slot.

I will try and uninstall the drive in device manager and also search the HP site for drivers.

    Ta very much! :good:
