I have a gateway essential computer with a Intel (Freeman) ZX Motherboard and i want to upgrade it to something like a pentium II or III but i dont know what kind of processor this board is capable of using. If i can upgrade do i have to install a new bios and where would i find an old processor like that?

sorry to tell you that you cant go above 533Mhz (celeron or pentium) but whatever you decide make sure that they dont have a "coppermine" core as they are not supported!
Its likely that you wont have to upgrade your BIOS but if you do get it from the manufacturers website. And as for where to get a cpu from you might check computer stores (they have connections), sounds stupid but check the dump for an old computer or just maybe a friend has one lying around!

Honestly, if I were you, I'd use that PC for a firewall and simply buy or build a new one. It would likely cost you more to update around that limited and outdated architecture than to buy a new PC with a modern architecture. Well, that's what I would do, so I digress; it's your PC after all.

Yeah I get what you were saying. I am just messing around with it since it is my parents computer.

Why does everybody like Smoothwall so much? IPCop has a dumb name, but it's the open-source fork of the Smoothwall project. It's actually better: easier to install, has more features, performs faster, and runs on lower-end hardware.
