So I plan to hook up my WIFI router to a network hard drive via USB. I also want to use this external hard drive for back-up. My 1st choice at the moment is the LaCie 1TB d2 Quadra Hard Disk Canada Computers - LaCie 1TB d2 Quadra Hard Disk (301442U) However it seems quite pricey ($190CDN). If I look at the same website I find several other hard drives, sometimes with more capacity and for much cheaper! For example Western Digital My Book Elite 1TB ($120) Canada Computers - Western Digital My Book Elite 1TB External Hard Drive Black (WDBAAH0010HCH-NESN) ... or the 1.5 TB for $140 Seagate FreeAgent Desk 2TB ($170) Canada Computers - Seagate FreeAgent Desk 2TB USB2.0 External Hard Drive (ST320005FDB2E1-RK) AcomData (PDHD1000UFSE-72) PureDrive 1TB ($110) Canada Computers - AcomData (PDHD1000UFSE-72) PureDrive 1TB External Hard Drive - USB2.0, eSATA, FireWire AcomData (PDHD2000UFSE) PureDrive 2TB ($175) Canada Computers - AcomData (PDHD2000UFSE) PureDrive 2TB External Hard Drive - USB, FireWire & eSATA HP SimpleSave 2TB ($180) Canada Computers - HP SimpleSave 2TB Desktop External Hard Drive (HPBAAD0020HBK-NHSN) ... or the 1.5TB for $140 HELP! I need something dependable, and I'm willing to pay a premium for known dependability. NOTE: I just realized that there are "network" external hard drives that accept an ethernet connection. I think that's best, no? e.g. Western Digital's World Edition http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=15_213_603&item_id=031508
The one your looking at has multiple interface which should explain the price difference, plus anything with a FireWire interface tends to more expensive! From the choices listed above I'd go for the Western Digital My Book Elite 1TB ($120), I've got one of their earlier portable models which is still working fine! Canada Computers - Western Digital Mybook World Edition 1TB Network External Hard Drive (WDH1NC10000N) is good choice, plus you can connect another USB hard drive for increased storage.
I would go for the D2 Quadra with triple interface. I like the idea that I got options to connect it to my pc. Firewire 800 is real fast. Just in case my USB port in not working or not available, I can always connect it via firewire. If you dont have a a firewire port, then just stick with what Sniper recommended.
