(solved-see End) This Compac is new to me, runs Win2000 and I added RAM to 512Mb Problem is it won't connect to the internet. My 100/10 cable modem makes the two chassis-lights work, (one winks), but using IE it refuses to visit any web-sites. I'm told (thanks for that) that IE ---Tools-Internet Options has little to do with the operation, but I've checked the box, so it finds the LAN connection address just like the Old PC I'm using now...though the very same cable modem. There is no built-in modem firewall and as far as I can sus none on the Compaq. I only want Internet surfing now.......email is a separate issue once connected. The Broadband is always on, although the Compaq appears to have been set-up for dial-up...I've been through the Wizzard and think it should now work using the 100/10 connector (sorry I don't know the strict term for this fatter than USB connector) -The Compac is giving signs of life at the connector and yet it appears to have some missing link inside. I haven't been able to check the BIOS and the only other issue is that a pop-up tells me the Registry is not 100% -but I'm suspicious this is an advertisement. If I can connect to the internet then I can do a sweep of the innards, as I can use the "Old PC" for emails and surfing (this has ZoneAlarm firewall and runs Win98SE).... The Compac will be reserved for photo-filing, editing pictures and printing-out, which the old PC refuses to do after many years. I suspect this is an LPT1 fault, but even that is by no means certain...but I live with it.... I'm trying to move to Ubuntu when they resolve some Java Issues and All-in-One printer/scanner support, which will only be a matter of time. Meanwhile I don't want to buy Vista, at least until SP1 is out, late 2007. I have several "trial" cover-mounts to fix PC's - but they need on-line registration....hence the need to connect the Compaq. Also I accept I need a new PC to take advantage of new Memory modules and "future-proof" my system, at least beyond Vista. The Compaq is a stop-gap....at least that was the idea! Arrgh. Solution: I phoned my ISp and reluctantly they fiddled with my modem (remotely!) and once reset it worked on the Compaq - I'm back on the "OldPC" right now so it seems it works on both! Their answer was that when changing computers the cable-modem needs to be Reset - there is a standby button on its front, but this merely saves power - by switching off the mains it is Reset.....easy when you know.....so it seems the modem must be adjusting itself to match the PC that's connected - odd....but what the heck?... . . If a fix works, use it!
