I was wondering whether anyone has taken (or is familiar with) the Linux+ course and examination? I've just bought the Linux+ Study Guide by Roger Federick, published by Sybex. I was wonding whether the qualification is worth while - recognised by employers?
[ot] [/ot] hehe... Mega has gone Linux mad... lock your disused computers.... Sorry... not a dig... only jesting
I haven't been asked for the Linux+ before, but that doesn't mean I won't be eventually. I have seen demand for RCNE and LPI, however.
Linux+ seems like a good introduction to the Linux world. Much like A+ is a good introduction to Microsoft MCSE. Would you agree? your right, lock away your computers, and lock away your mothers.....
I don't know, it seems like you know more about it than I do! Still, if the price is right, I'd go for it. Couldn't hurt, right?
On the subject of qualifications, i'm in my final 3 months of my Higher National Diploma in computing.. I have been working part-time & full-time (on and off) for the last 3 years for an Engineering Company, so i have good industry experience, i've also done alot of Web Design recently and Application Development (Databases & ordering systems) for people. I would consider my knowledge of linux to be very good, especially with regards to Windows & Linux domains, embedded systems, servers and security. I can build a custom Gentoo install (from scratch ) (done it twice now) My point is, i havn't got any linux qualifications, but i was thinking over the summer of doing one of these at home courses.. as i reckon i could get it done very quickly, AT what do you think would be a good qualification to get with my knowledge?
If I decide to take it, I won't be paying for class lessons. I will be self studying in my spare time. The book was about £18 and the exam roughly £115, so I guess it's worth it!
Sounds like a steal, I'd go for it. Like I said, it couldn't hurt, unless you want to work for some low-level firm reformatting Windows boxen all day or removing spyware like a "Geek Squad" drone. In that case, certifications make you look too, you know, competent, which makes you overqualified for such a job. They don't want to pay much! But since I suspect you are aspiring to more than that, I'd say go for it! The number one cert I've been asked for and indeed the one which seems to demand the most actual skill is the RHCE. If you can afford to persue it, I'd go that route. The LPI certs are more specialized, but also very involved and say a lot on a resume. I would look into those also, if you can.
