I originally had this problem about 2 weeks ago. I had my laptop in my car, and i got into a bad accident and my laptop had to have bounced around in the car quite a few times. When I got home, I turned on my laptop to find that the regular mode would not load, but I could open it in safe mode. Somehow, after doing something, or just waiting, my laptop just started working again after a little while, and regular mode worked with no problem. Earlier today though, after my laptop was disconnected and my battery died, I plugged my laptop back in and I had the same issue. It may have been the first time my laptop has been "restarted" since the accident. I can not remember what I did to get my laptop to work again the last time I had this issue, but I really need to get this fixed. When I turn on my laptop to load up the regular mode, it takes a much longer time than normal to get past the login screen, and once it does, it only loads the background and mouse, and that's it. I can't open my task manager, and there is no start menu, icons, or anything else. I can't do anything besides shut down the laptop by hitting the power button. I think that I may have done something with drivers last time to fix it, but if anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear it. Thanks for any help anyone can offer! Edit: I should also mention, I've scanned every driver, and no issues have come up, except that there is an "Unknown Driver" that doesn't have any driver software installed, and I can't install any updates for it. I tried disabling and uninstalling it to load up the regular mode, but to no avail. It reappeared in the driver list when I loaded up safe mode.
Thank you for the welcome And no, it does not make a clicking sound. It makes no irregular noises at all.
I would run SFC and see what happens - Start the computer in any mode which will load the desktop. Go to 'Start' - 'Run'. Type in SFC /scannow and click on 'Ok'. Have your XP installation/recovery disk handy, in case Windows need to replace a damaged file.... see what happens
