Hello Everybody, I am trying to connect a client workstation to our Win 2003 server. What is the proper procedure for doing this? Any help is greatly Appreciated.
We are using a domain, and I am the admin for the server. I am working for a not for profit org and am learning this as we go along.
It should be noted that although I was an NT Domain Admin for years, since those days I've used nothing but Linux -- completely replacing Windows in the server niche. This includes domain controllers and file servers, so any information I can give you will be general, not specific to the point of "click here, click there". However, even with a Linux PDC the Windows client side of the network remains the same, so I'll be able to give you a great deal of detail for the Windows client setup if necessary. First define access groups -- who will have access to what and what privileges they will have there. Always limit privileges to the least they can get away with and still do their job. Next, create users and assign them to the groups you've created. Do not use generically defined user groups for network-only users. Now create network shares and apply the appropriate user/group privileges. Finally, rollout the domain settings to the client systems -- make them join the domain, write logon scripts if necessary, and map network drives, etc. Let me know if you need any further explanation.
