Ok, first of all, soz if this is in the wrong place.

Anyway, my mum has lots of vinal disks, she wants to put them onto normal compact disks or onto MP3 on the computer, i noticed my X-FI has some sort of app that can convert vinals into mp3, just how exatly do i do it? do i use MiDi port? do i have to buy some sort of hardware to record the vinals, or do i just connect the Hi-Fi up to the ports on the front panel on the sound card?

You will need to connect your record player (if required via your amp) to your soundcards line in plug.

Then its a matter of recording from line in. I did do it once with a mini-dsc player. It shouldnt be too much different, though because of the nature of of record players you will need to boost your signal with a preamp or hi-fi amp.

How you actually record the line in is down to the software you've got. You will probably have something which came with your soundcard which will do the job fine.

Willz, It will have phono plugs.

They are usally red and white, but not always.

You can get phone to 3.5mm jack converters. You will probably have one for a digital camera (so you can plug it into the telly) Use that.

The line in will probably have to been turned up to full volume though because record players only output at a low volume.

This is why you dont plug cd players, tuners, minidisc players etc into your phono input on an amplifier. The cd, tuner etc already has its "volume" turned up in the component itself and will be cranked up again if plugged into the phono circuit on the amp. The sound will be distorted and loud! Whereas record players dont do this so they need cranking up somewhere else, ie in a preamp (for amps without a phono in) or in the phono circuit of the amplifier.

What only has a headphone socket, the record player?

If so it will probably be for the big headphone plugs. Yeah, if you can run a lead fom that headphone socket into the line in on your soundcard it should work.
