My custom built home server shut off on it's own from time to time. My guess is the CPU is over heating causing it to shut off. what is the best cooling method? A better heatsync or switching to liquid cooled?

Well, first off, I would check the current cooler for dust build up and that it's still seating correctly. Also, make sure the fan is still spinning as well as any case fans that might be in there.

What are the specs of the system anyway? Include the power supply brand and model. Heat could be the cause, but not the only thing. Additionally, the CPU and motherboard will determine what replacement options are available to you if needed.
