Hi all I was just doing some window shopping and came across this processor: Intel Core Duo T2400 Processor - 1.83GHz (2048KB L2 Cache). It states that it uses the S478 package. Does that mean it will fit in my ASRock PV88+ ? And if it does and will work (my FSB is 800Mhz), will it be an improvement on my 3Ghz Prescott? This could have serious (positive) implications on my ability to upgrade my PC without forking out a fortune.... Other CPU's on the site are the T2500 and T2600 but they are far too expensive for me... Cheers! Update:  did not realise this is the Mobile CPU..... However, my question stands. Oh, and also, how do I go about cooling it?
If its socket 478 then it will be a laptop cpu. Although some older chipsets say they will support dual core processors I think the motherboard manufacturer has to also support dual cores cpus when they design the board. You gonna be looking at Intel 965 and 975x for core 2 duos.... I think they are socket 775. EDIT: Only when I was checking what id typed I noticed.... "Update: did not realise this is the Mobile CPU..... However, my question stands. Oh, and also, how do I go about cooling it?" The core 2 duo is a huge improvement on the prescott, given software which uses the full effect of dual core cpus it could probably be said to be in a different league altogether.
Fair point, I will try and get in touch with ASRock to see if there are any limitations, I doubt I will get an answer from them in a hurry..... Man, if I could afford an Intel chipset I would have never bothered with ASRock..... :O Now we are getting somewhere..... LOL
Voltage support would be one key thing, as in if the motherboard uses a compatible VRM standard, v11 being the latest (last I checked). Another would be what kind of support Intel gives for running mobile CPU in a desktop setting. I know AMD will not support mobile Socket 754 CPUs in desktop motherboards, but I'm unsure what Intel's position is. If Intel doesn't support it, it may very well work, but ASrock may not be able to provide BIOS updates that address any issues with it.
Thanks Zeus and the B, I have checked on ASRock site and no, the P4V88 does not support any Dual core processors, let alone the T2X00 mobile processors. I have sent them a support request but I am not holding my breath. I am hardly in a position to buy a CPU just to try so I suppose this is a dead end for me. I think the right thing to do is to upgrade mobo+cpu package to be able to move away from the 478 package. Unfortunately this is unlikely to happen for some time.... Thanks for looking guys! Oh, one funny thing I have noticed - ASRock's latest BIOS for my board is V1.70. My BIOS screen states I have V1.80....... LOL I guess I am way ahead of them..... :chk: Update: I am more of an arse than I thought I was - my model is the P4V88 and not the + version. Therefore my BIOS version is right...
This is why I did not want to contact ASRock: If you search Intel's site for the mentioned CPU you get here: Intel® Core™ Duo processor T2400 - sl8vq Which states - Package type 478 Pin. So what do you think.... ASRock or Ass-Shmock? Or is it Saba-Shmok?
When the Pentium M came out its used 478 pins but it couldnt be used in a desktop skt478 so they rearranged the 478 pins so it wouldnt fit and named it skt479. Then came the Intel Core which also has 478 pins but it wasnt compatible with the Penitum M systems so they rearranged the 478 pins again and called it Socket M. They all have 478 pins but are a slightly different package. I think Asus made desktop motherboards which allowed you to use Pentium M processors (skt479) but thats about it. *Massive Rant* - Why do they need to :swear: have so many different:swear: socket types? GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR :swear: GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR *End of Massive Rant* Thanks Zeus.
