My computer prompted me to create a backup cd. I have windows wp media center. I have a recprdable CD-R that has music on it. Can I use this cd to create bpve recovey disc? If so do I have to erase it first? I tried it and all that it did was play the music.

    in a word NO
CD-r discs can only ever be written once, so if your going to write a CD-r you may as well use as mush space as possible as the disc cannot be rewritten to,
CD-RW discs (CD-ReWritable) can be erased (made blank again, ready for reuse)

you can't get the music off the CD-r so it will just play the music

XP media center will probably support UDF (a way of putting stuff on a CD) so a blank CD-r can be written as and when you want (so it will show free space) but it can only be written fully once
basically i only use CD-RW discs, because they can be blanked

I recommend you to use the CD-R because a backup CD is something which you dont want to loose and will be in need of it anytime. So, you will not gonna erase that from CD.
You cannot erase data from a CD-R. But you can use if more than once unless the session is not closed and CD space is not full.
